If you have started looking for a wood impregnating stain, you have probably already discovered that there is no such thing as "the impregnating stain", but many versions designed for different situations. It is the most searched query in this sector, but also one of the most misunderstood: many people think any impregnating stain will do for any wood, in any condition. That is not the case, and the difference shows in the result after one or two winters.

What an impregnating stain really is

An impregnating stain does not form a surface film like a classic varnish: it penetrates the wood fibres, nourishes the wood and protects it from within, leaving a natural, breathable appearance on the surface. This means it follows the movements of the wood — seasonal expansion and contraction — without peeling or cracking, which is why it remains the most popular choice for exterior wood.

The four impregnating stains in the range

Impregnante Alta Protezione (65.665) — the most complete deep-penetrating exterior impregnating stain in the water-based line: non-yellowing, fast-drying, with a blend of UV filters and specific action against mould and blue stain fungus. It is the right choice for balconies, garage doors, timber houses, beams and carpentry work — anything that is highly exposed and needs maximum protection.

Impregnante e Finitura Effetto Cera (65.675) — the same water-based technology, but with a different finish: it forms a slightly fuller film with a pleasant wax effect, and it is designed for interiors as well as exteriors. Its gel structure makes it drip-free, ideal for beams and roof spaces where an overly liquid product would cause runs.

Ecologic Legno (62.620) — the impregnating stain in the solvent-based range: clear or tinted, with fungicidal and anti-woodworm action. It penetrates without forming a film and protects against the absorption of driving rain. It is the right choice when the situation calls for the deeper penetration typical of solvent-based products, for example on very absorbent or damaged wood.

Seriltop Solar Filter (62.609) — also solvent-based, but a finishing product: it is satin, elastic and insect-repellent, with filters that reflect UV rays. Compared with Ecologic Legno, it is intended more as the final step of a system, for items that need a more refined look while keeping protection high.

    How to choose in practice

The first question to ask yourself is: water or solvent? Water-based impregnating stains (65.665, 65.675) are odourless, fast-drying and increasingly sought after by people looking for a product that is also suitable for lived-in spaces. Solvent-based ones (62.620, 62.609) remain irreplaceable in some situations: very porous wood, difficult weather conditions, or when the greatest possible penetration is needed.

The second question is: pure protection, or appearance too? If the main goal is to defend the wood — a structural beam, a garage, a barely visible element — Alta Protezione or Ecologic Legno are enough. If instead the look matters as much as the protection — a veranda, garden furniture on display — Effetto Cera or Seriltop Solar Filter give a more refined finish.

    A mistake to avoid

Not all impregnating stains can be layered on top of each other at random. Some systems use a protective impregnating stain as a base and a finishing impregnating stain on top: it is the combination, not the single product, that often gives the best and longest-lasting result. Before choosing, it is worth asking yourself not just "which impregnating stain", but "which system".

    In summary

There is no universal impregnating stain, but four different tools for different situations. Alta Protezione (65.665) for maximum water-based protection, Effetto Cera (65.675) when appearance matters too, Ecologic Legno (62.620) for the penetration typical of solvent-based products, Seriltop Solar Filter (62.609) as a satin, insect-repellent finish.
