How to enhance wooden wall cladding with the finish best suited to your style

Walls clad in wooden slats or panels have been one of the most sought-after interior design features of recent years: they bring warmth to a room, work in contemporary living rooms as well as in cosier bedrooms, and pair well with very different styles. But choosing the right finish makes an enormous difference to the final result.
Why the finish matters more than the cut or colour of the wood
Slats and panels are often made from light or natural wood species, intended to stay on show without covering the grain too much. On such a large and visible surface — an entire wall, not a small piece of furniture — even small differences in finish become much more noticeable than on a single object.
The two main routes for wall cladding
Natural, matt effect: if you want the wood to stay as close as possible to its raw appearance, with only minimal protection and no glossy effect, a Vernice Satinata per Legno (65.676) is the most fitting choice. It keeps the grain clearly visible, does not yellow over time, and is almost imperceptible to the touch.
Warmer, fuller effect: if instead you prefer a slightly richer result, with a wax-like feel, Impregnante e Finitura Effetto Cera (65.675) gives a more lived-in, welcoming result, particularly suitable for rooms such as bedrooms or reading areas.
An often underestimated detail: applying on vertical surfaces
Unlike a horizontal surface, a clad wall requires attention to the risk of runs during application, especially with more liquid products. This is where denser or gel formulations, as in the case of the Wax Effect, offer a real practical advantage: less risk of visible drips on a large vertical surface.
How to prepare the slats before finishing
If the panel comes already sanded at the factory, preparation generally requires only dusting and, if necessary, a very light key sanding for adhesion. If instead you are working with reclaimed wood or material that is uneven in colour, a preliminary coat of Fondotinta Uniformante (64.642) gives you a consistent base colour across the whole wall.
Practical considerations for a large wall project
On a large surface, calculate the product coverage with a margin: for the Satin Varnish the indicative coverage is 10-12 m²/L, so for a medium-sized wall a 2.5-litre can is generally enough for two coats. Always apply a test patch on a hidden area or an offcut, to check the result before treating the whole wall.
In summary
Wall cladding in wooden slats or panels deserves a carefully chosen finish, because on such a large surface every characteristic of the product shows much more than on a single piece of furniture. Satin Varnish (65.676) for a natural, matt effect, Impregnante e Finitura Effetto Cera (65.675) for a warmer, more lived-in result.
